Recreational opportunities are abundant with fourteen public golf courses, 23 public tennis facilities, hiking, fishing, water sports and snow skiing. There is also a minor league baseball team and several horse shows. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is also home to the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, one of more than 250 institutes for learning in retirement. It was designed to provide lifelong learning, leadership, and community service opportunities for retirement-aged individuals.

Nicknamed the "Paris of the South", Asheville boasts a beautiful historic district with bed and breakfast inns, graceful old homes and The Biltmore House, a 255 room mansion constructed by George Vanderbilt in 1895.

With a population of around 75,000, it is the largest city in western North Carolina. The Medical care is superb with Memorial Mission Hospital being the major medical center for western North Carolina as well as several other facilities including St. Joseph Hospital with 24 hour emergency care and the Asheville VA Medical Center. Medical expenses here are less expensive than the national average which also makes it appealing to many retirees.

Selected by Where to Retire Magazine as one of its “Eight Enriching Towns for Art and Music Lovers,” Asheville boasts the largest free outdoor music festival in the Southeast. If you enjoy cultural activities, there’s The Asheville Art Museum, The Folk Art Center and various other artistic outlets in a city as well as the Asheville Symphony and the Brevard Music Center which present year-round music programs. There is also the Asheville Community Theater and Shakespeare in the Park for those who enjoy the performing arts.

The climate may, however be an issue for some with the average January high temperature being 48 degrees with a low of 27 degrees and an average summertime high temperature of 84 degrees with a low of 63 degrees. Humidity averages between 58% and 74% and the area receives approximately 16 inches of snow and 38 inches of rain per year.

The only other downfall may the higher housing and utilities (housing costs are 15% to 20% above the national average) but these seem to be balanced out by the low medical costs.All in all, it is easy to see why so many retirees are choosing one of the many Asheville NC retirement communities to call home.
