Portland Retirement Communities

Have you thought about a Portland retirement community? If you haven’t, it may be something that you will want to think about. According to a survey that was done at Cal State University, Portland, along with Boulder, Colorado ranked number one in top places to retire.

The survey, done by Dr. Warren Bland, author of the book, Retire in Style: 60 Outstanding Places Across the USA and Canada and an expert in the field of retirement, was based on 12 criteria considered most important to retirees: landscape, climate, quality of life, cost of living, transportation, retail services, health care, community services, cultural activities, recreational activities, work/volunteer activities, and crime.

Located along the Willamette River in the shadow of the Cascade Range, Portland’s mild, marine climate is seldom severely hot or cold. The average high summertime temperature in July is 81 °F with a low of 58 °F. Winters can be mild to chilly, and very moist, with January high temperatures averaging 46 °F and low temperatures of 37 °F.

It usually only snows a few times a year but the city has been to have some major snow and ice storms because of the cold air outflow from the Columbia River Gorge.Portland has been referred to as the greenest city in the United States. It is a pedestrian friendly city and any destination that isn't an easy walk is an easy ride on the Portland Streetcar or MAX light rail.

Goose Hollow, southwest of Downtown Portland is marked by turn-of-the-century homes and local institutions like the Goose Hollow Inn and Leaky Roof pub. It is also within walking distance of Washington Park, which is home to the Japanese Garden, the International Test Rose Garden and the Hoyt Arboretum. The MAX Light Rail system travels through the neighborhood making several stops so transportation is never an issue. Money Magazine named this neighborhood one of the best places to retire in its October 2007 issue. Two-bedroom condos in vintage buildings start at about $300,000.

Another neighborhood that made Money Magazine’s “Best places to retire list” is Portland’s Pearl District, named for the galleries and other "hidden gems" tucked into the old warehouse buildings. Located in the heart of the city, a 1,000-square-foot loft condo will cost you between $400,000 and $500,000 and a one-bedroom rents for $1,500 a month.

Russellville Park, located in downtown Portland, offers luxurious studio, one and two bedroom apartment homes. Some of the features of this community include: Concierge services, an upscale restaurant, Complimentary laundry facilities, Three elevators, a Computer center with high-speed internet access, a Landscaped courtyard with lighted walking paths, seating areas and water fountains, a Library, a Bocce ball court, a Bistro and Billiards. Assisted Living and Memory care will be added in 2009.

The Portland area has several retirement communities with all levels of care. Holladay Park Plaza, one of the top continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) in the Northwest, offers cosmopolitan retirement living in the heart of Portland's cultural district. The Plaza's two-acre campus is located right across the street from the Lloyd Center, and is close to shopping, fine restaurants, and a variety of cultural venues. This ideal setting allows residents to enjoy all the advantages of city living, yet natural beauty is also close at hand.

These are just a few of the many Portland retirement communities that retirees have to choose from. If you are looking for single family active adult retirement communities, there are several near Portland, outside of Salem that you may want to check into.
