Sun City AZ has a population of 40,000 plus and is country’s first adult community specifically designed for active retirees. There is no age restriction on ownership in Sun City but to live there, one member of the household must be at least 55 and all other residents must be at least 19 years old.

Children under 19 are allowed to visit only on a temporary basis. This can be either a pro or a con when considering this retirement community; it’s up to each individual.

There are lots of things to do in Sun City AZ. There are more than 350 civic, service, church, charitable, cultural, and recreational groups that offer a wide variety of activities.

For an Annual Property Assessment Fee of $396 (yearly fees are subject to change), resident get full access to all of the recreation centers.

There are 7 recreation centers that offer activities like swimming, walking tracks, bowling, lawn bowling, tennis and racquetball. If you enjoy dancing, they offer square dancing as well as ballroom dancing. You can take advantage of one of the many weight rooms or one of the 11 golf courses. There is also a private lake where you can enjoy fishing.

If that doesn’t interest you, the recreation centers also offer space for the many clubs at Sun City like ceramics, needle arts, calligraphy, woodworking, metalworking, lapidary, silver craft, stained glass and model railroading.

If you enjoy shopping, Sun City AZ has 7 major strip malls as well as smaller plazas. Within a 20 minute drive is one of the largest shopping malls in Phoenix.

There are quite a few quality health care facilities in and around Sun City including Boswell Memorial Hospital located right in Sun City. It is considered one of the states best as well as most cost effective hospitals in the country. The Sun City area also has more than 20 care facilities, with services ranging from assisted living to complete skilled care.

If you are in need of handicapped services, Sun City Area Transit provides inexpensive door-to-door service within the city. There is also Meals on Wheels for those who can’t prepare their own meals.

There are 30 churches and synagogues to choose from. Seven colleges and universities of over 2000 students within 25 miles of Sun City Arizona so there are lots of cultural activities. If you enjoy sports, besides the Arizona State Sun Devils, you can also enjoy professional baseball (Arizona Diamondbacks), football (NFL Cardinals), basketball (NBA Suns and WNBA Mercury), and Hockey (NHL Coyotes).

Starting home prices range from around $85,000 for a condominium. Single family homes range from around $150,000 for a small home to around $500,000 for a large home on the golf course or lake.

Property taxes are pretty reasonable at less than $700 a year on a $125,000.

Don’t just jump into a retirement community. Make sure that you visit and spend some time talking to the residents before you decide if Sun City Retirement or another retirement community is right for you.
